Location

Cabana Paltinu is located in Sibiu County, at an altitude of 2050 meters, in the immediate vicinity of the glacial lake Bâlea (2034 meters altitude) with an area of over 4.6 hectares, near the national road "Transfăgărășan" which reaches the maximum altitude of 2042 meters near the chalet, and the Bâlea - Capra tunnel which pierces the Făgăraș Mountains between the peaks of Paltinu (2398 meters altitude) and Iezerul Caprei (2417 meters altitude). The Bâlea - Capra tunnel connects Transylvania to Muntenia, two ancient Romanian provinces, with a length of almost 900 meters, being the longest road tunnel in Romania and situated at the highest altitude.
It is situated in the middle of the Făgăraș Mountains, nearly 9km in a straight line from Moldoveanu Peak (2544m altitude), the highest peak in Romania, and 5km from Negoiu Peak (2535m altitude), the second highest peak in Romania in terms of altitude and importance.
The glacial cirque Bâlea, where the Cabana Paltinu is located, is dominated by crenelated ridges from which rise from east to west the peaks of Vânătoarea lui Buteanu (2507m altitude), Văiuga (2443m altitude), Iezerul Caprei, and Paltinu, separated by the saddle of Capra (2315m altitude) and the Bâlea saddle (2208m altitude).

Bucharest 310km via Brașov and 230km via Curtea de Argeș - Pitești Access to the Cabana Paltinu is possible by:

- Car via the national road "Transfăgărășan" when traffic is permitted.
- Plane to Sibiu and Bucharest airports, then by car or helicopter from there.
- Train to CFR stations Ucea or Avrig (the closest ones), then by car.
- Helicopter to the chalet's heliport located 50m away.
