It is situated in the middle of the Făgăraș Mountains, nearly 9km in a straight line from Moldoveanu Peak (2544m altitude), the highest peak in Romania, and 5km from Negoiu Peak (2535m altitude), the second highest peak in Romania in terms of altitude and importance.
The glacial cirque Bâlea, where the Cabana Paltinu is located, is dominated by crenelated ridges from which rise from east to west the peaks of Vânătoarea lui Buteanu (2507m altitude), Văiuga (2443m altitude), Iezerul Caprei, and Paltinu, separated by the saddle of Capra (2315m altitude) and the Bâlea saddle (2208m altitude).
